Rubber Conveyor Belts: M-24, N-17 & Heat-Resistant Grades

Rubber Conveyor Belt Grades Explained

A rubber conveyor belt has a fabric carcass of one or more plies, usually nylon-nylon (N/N) or polyester-nylon (EP), protected by a top (carrying) cover and a bottom cover. The carcass carries the tension. The covers take the wear, heat and chemical attack.

M-24: heavy-duty abrasion resistance

M-24 covers are compounded for sharp, abrasive and heavy material such as iron ore, sponge iron, coal, crushed stone and jaw crusher discharge. They suit medium to heavy duty at normal material temperatures up to about 70 °C.

N-17: general and medium duty

N-17 covers suit less abrasive bulk material in power plants, paper mills, sugar mills and cattle or fish feed plants, again for material below about 70 °C.

Special grades

Heat-resistant (HR, SHR), oil- and chemical-resistant, flame-retardant and rough-top covers are available where standard grades would fail early. M-24 and N-17 are cover grades defined in IS 1891 (Part 1).

Models we supply

Special-Purpose Rubber Belts

Belts with covers or profiles for heat, chemicals, grip or a specific machine.

Heat-Resistant (HR/SHR) Rubber Belt

Heat-Resistant (HR/SHR) Rubber Belt

Heat-resistant covers for hot clinker, sinter, castings and similar material. The SHR grade suits material at around 160 °C, with a maximum of 180 °C.

Belt width 500–1000 mm
Thickness 11–15 mm
Operating temperature 160 °C (180 °C max, SHR)
Hardness 65 ± 5 Shore A
Weight 12 kg/m²
Length Up to 400 m
Oil and Chemical-Resistant Belt

Oil and Chemical-Resistant Belt

Nitrile-based covers resist swelling and softening from oils, fats, waxes, solvents and many industrial chemicals. Typical loads include oil cake, soya meal, feeds, soap and fertiliser.

Belt width 1050 mm
Thickness 10 mm
Cover tensile strength 15 MPa
Working temperature Up to 80 °C
Rough Top Rubber Belt

Rough Top Rubber Belt

A textured top cover that grips cartons, bags and parcels on inclines and declines, and cushions the load.

Belt width 1000 mm
Thickness 10 mm
Cover tensile strength 15 MPa
Magnetic Separator Belt

Magnetic Separator Belt

A cleated belt for overbelt magnets. The magnet lifts tramp iron from the product stream, and the cleats carry it out of the magnetic field to a collection point, protecting crushers and improving product quality.

Belt width 650 mm
Thickness 8 mm
Belt rating 200 N/mm
Uses Coal, cement, glass and tyre recycling
Coloured Rubber Belt

Coloured Rubber Belt

Rubber belts with coloured covers for sugar, chemical, food and pharmaceutical plants. Specify a food-grade compound wherever the belt touches the product.

Belt width 1200 mm
Thickness 8 mm
Cover tensile strength 15 MPa
Potato Grader Belt

Potato Grader Belt

A rubber belt for potato grading and sorting machines. Width and profile are matched to your grader.

Belt width 500–1000 mm
Material Rubber

How to Choose the Right Rubber Belt

Match the cover grade to the material and the carcass to the conveyor.

If your conveyor handles… Choose Why
Sharp, heavy, abrasive bulk (ore, stone, coal) M-24 cover, 4–5 ply Best cut and abrasion resistance
Moderate bulk (grain, feed, ash, paper waste) N-17 cover, 3–4 ply Economical for general duty
Material above about 80 °C HR or SHR grade Standard covers harden and crack with heat
Oily, fatty or chemical material Oil/chemical-resistant cover Prevents swelling and softening
Bags and cartons on an incline Rough top belt Extra grip without cleats
Loose bulk on an incline Chevron belt Moulded cleats stop roll-back

What to Send Us for a Rubber Belt Quote

Include as many of these as you can. A photo of the old belt and its markings helps.

  • Belt type or the material you are conveying (lump size, bulk density, abrasiveness)
  • Belt width and required length, or the conveyor centre distance
  • Thickness, number of plies and cover grade if you already know them
  • Material temperature and any oil, chemical or food-contact requirement
  • Incline angle and required capacity (t/h or units per hour)
  • Joint type: endless (vulcanised) or open-ended for mechanical fasteners
  • Photos or a drawing of the existing belt or conveyor, if you are replacing one

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about rubber conveyor belt.

What does M-24 mean on a rubber conveyor belt?

M-24 is a cover grade for abrasive, heavy-duty service. It is the usual choice for ore, coal, crushed stone and similar sharp materials at normal temperatures.

How many plies does my rubber belt need?

It depends on the belt tension, which comes from conveyor length, lift, load and drive power. Short, lightly loaded conveyors often run on 3 ply, while longer or heavier ones need 4 or 5 ply. Send us your conveyor details and we will check it.

What is the difference between N/N and EP belts?

N/N belts use nylon in both directions and are flexible with good impact resistance. EP belts use polyester lengthwise and nylon crosswise, so they stretch less and suit longer conveyors with less take-up travel.

How thick should the top cover be?

Thicker top covers last longer under abrasive, lumpy material and heavy impact at the loading point. Fine or light material can run on thinner covers. The overall belt thickness we quote includes the carcass and both covers.

Why is my rubber belt cracking or hardening?

Surface cracking and hardening are usually caused by material that is hotter than the cover grade allows, or by exposure to oil or chemicals. Switching to a heat-resistant or oil-resistant grade normally solves it.

Can rubber belts be supplied in long lengths?

Yes. Belts can be supplied in lengths up to 400 m, depending on width and construction. Longer conveyors are joined on site.

Which rubber belt should I use for an overbelt magnet?

Use a cleated magnetic separator belt sized to the magnet. The cleats carry captured tramp iron out of the magnetic field so it drops into a collection bin instead of sticking to the belt.
